2021 Tidal Break Vineyard, Sonoma Coast Chardonnay
Tidal Break sits in the lee of a forbidden Buddhist monastery on the far Sonoma Coast. There are several energy vortexes nearby running along what the locals call "...the tail of the serpent" (aka the spine of the Andreas Fault). This site has presence. Multiple aspects, all vertiginous, awash in sea fog, and surrounded by coastal forest. It is as-remote-a- vineyard as we’ve ever been involved with, and certainly no place for weekend farmers.
All the labor is done by-hand, by a highly trained team of vineyard workers. Our rows of low yielding clone 4 chardonnay are planted on luminescent blue volcanic rock and sandstone. And the wine? LIOCO club members and our friends at Michelin starred Single Thread Farms will fight you for it. As chiseled and mineral a chardonnay as we have ever bottled. Razor sharp at 12.9% abv and 3.2 pH. It smells like a liqueur made from sea shells, finger limes, and wild herbs. The attack is chalky mineral, sea spray, white miso, and yuzu. Sara likes to pair this with halibut crudo.
